THE CHAMPAGNE TEXTURE OF A 1981 CARAVELLE QUARTZ
This 1981 Caravelle Quartz presents the early quartz dress watch in a particularly refined form. Its compact 32mm case has a softly rounded profile and notably slim proportions, measuring approximately 7mm thick and 37mm from lug to lug. The result is an understated, highly wearable watch that slips easily beneath a shirt cuff while retaining enough visual character for everyday use.
The defining feature is its champagne-gold hobnail dial, formed from a fine repeating pattern of raised pyramidal facets. Sometimes described as a Clous de Paris or waffle texture, the surface catches light differently from every angle, shifting between pale champagne, warm gold, and muted silver tones. The intricate texture gives the dial depth without making it feel ornate or overly decorative.
Applied gold-tone baton markers rise cleanly above the patterned surface, accompanied by slender matching hour and minute hands and a central sweep-seconds hand. Fine black minute markings around the perimeter introduce just enough contrast, while the restrained Caravelle and Quartz signatures preserve the dial’s balance. The gold-tone base-metal case and stainless-steel back complete the quietly formal appearance.
Caravelle was introduced by Bulova in 1962 as a more accessible watch line, and by the beginning of the 1980s, quartz movements had become an important part of its catalog. The P1 date code stamped on the caseback identifies this example as having been produced in 1981, placing it firmly within the period when quartz technology was reshaping everyday watchmaking.
Inside is the Swiss-made Bulova caliber 2801.10, a seven-jewel quartz movement with central sweep seconds. Its thin electronic construction allowed Caravelle to create a watch that was precise and practical without sacrificing the elegant proportions of a traditional dress watch. Rather than presenting quartz as a futuristic novelty, this example incorporates it into a restrained and familiar design.
A brand-new genuine leather Kreisler strap in warm brown complements the champagne dial and gold-tone case, giving the watch a sympathetic period appearance. The strap is a later replacement rather than the original fitting. With its 17mm lug width, modest diameter, and slim case, the watch is particularly well suited to smaller wrists or to anyone who appreciates the refined scale of vintage dress watches.

Dealer assessment
This 1981 Caravelle Quartz P1 is in very good vintage condition, with light signs of age and use visible across the gold-tone base-metal bezel and lugs, including some surface wear and darker areas at the edges. The hobnail textured dial remains clean and legible, with its gold-tone baton markers and hands presenting well. The crystal shows light hairline scratches. It is fitted with a brand-new genuine leather Kreisler strap, which is not original to the watch, and a gold buckle. The stainless-steel caseback displays the Caravelle P1 marking and expected material designation. Water resistance has not been tested and should not be assumed.
