1971 CITIZEN AUTOMATIC — MIDNIGHT BLUE IN STEEL
Produced in October 1971, the Citizen Automatic 4-722175 Y captures a defining period in Japanese watchmaking, when traditional mechanical craftsmanship was meeting the bold, architectural design language of the 1970s. During this era, Citizen was expanding its automatic offerings with increasingly sophisticated movements and unconventional case designs. This particular reference embodies that transition, pairing a distinctly modern silhouette with the mechanical engineering that helped establish Citizen as one of Japan's leading watchmakers.
The centerpiece is a striking midnight-blue fumé dial, featuring a subtle gradient that transitions from a lighter blue at its center to a richer, darker blue around its perimeter. This smoky effect gives the dial a remarkable sense of depth, shifting in character depending on how the light catches its surface. Polished silver-tone hands and applied rectangular hour markers provide a sharp contrast against the dial, while a framed day-date aperture at three o'clock adds a functional, geometric detail without disrupting its restrained composition. Surrounding it is a substantial stainless steel tonneau case, measuring approximately 35.5mm across, with broad brushed surfaces, angular shoulders, and a polished inner bezel. The matching brushed steel bracelet continues the case's sharp lines, giving the watch a cohesive, distinctly seventies appearance.
Inside is a 26-jewel automatic movement belonging to Citizen's 72-series family, a generation of mechanical calibers introduced around the turn of the decade. These movements represented an important step forward in Citizen's pursuit of refined, dependable automatic timekeeping, incorporating practical features such as hand-winding capability and day-date functionality. The 26-jewel construction reflects the mechanical sophistication Citizen was bringing to its everyday wristwatches during this period.
What makes this Citizen particularly compelling is its balance of restraint and character. The blue fumé dial lends an understated elegance, while the angular case and integrated-style bracelet give it an unmistakably vintage personality. More than fifty years after its production, the design remains remarkably contemporary, offering an appealing example of the creativity and technical ambition that defined Japanese watchmaking in the early 1970s.
