THE BEGINNING OF A CITIZEN WORKHORSE
Produced in July 1976, this Citizen Automatic arrived at an important moment in the company’s mechanical history. Its calibre 8200A had been introduced only months earlier, the beginning of a movement family that would ultimately become one of Citizen’s most enduring automatic platforms. What started here in the mid-1970s would remain part of the brand’s mechanical vocabulary for decades.
The watch itself is unmistakably of its period. A rich blue dial sits inside a broad stainless-steel cushion case, with faceted applied markers, slim baton hands and a day-date display at three. There is very little unnecessary decoration—just CITIZEN, AUTOMATIC, and 17 JEWELS against the blue—giving the watch the clean, slightly architectural character that defined some of the best Japanese design of the decade.
Inside is Citizen’s 17-jewel calibre 8200A, a 21,600-vph automatic movement with the ability to be wound by hand. The 8200 architecture would eventually become one of Citizen’s true workhorses, but this example comes from its earliest chapter: serial 60701482 dates it to July 1976, just months after the movement family entered production.
The proportions complete the look. At roughly 35mm across and 41mm long, the case wears compact by modern standards but has far more presence than the dimensions suggest, thanks to its wide shoulders and integrated appearance. Paired with the intricate stainless-steel bracelet and saturated blue dial, it is a particularly complete expression of mid-’70s Citizen—mechanically important, distinctly Japanese, and increasingly difficult to find in this kind of presentation.
