1994 SEIKO LUCENT — A FORGOTTEN JAPANESE-MARKET DRESS WATCH
Produced in October 1994 for the Japanese market, this Seiko Lucent SSCRW045 is a remarkably well-preserved example of one of Seiko’s lesser-known dress collections. Its softly rounded case, ivory dial, stylized Arabic numerals and slender leaf hands give it an elegant character that feels distinctly different from the sports watches Seiko is better known for today.
The case is constructed from base metal and finished in palladium plating, giving it its bright, silvery appearance, while a curved sapphire crystal rises subtly above the dial. The original D094AZ bracelet continues the design with alternating brushed and polished surfaces. More than three decades later, this example remains in near-mint condition and retains its full-length original bracelet.
Lucent occupied a refined corner of Seiko’s Japanese domestic catalog during the 1990s. The collection centered around slim quartz dress watches, often offered in coordinated men’s and women’s variations, with an emphasis on elegant proportions, decorative finishing and understated design. While lines such as Seiko 5 and the company’s divers became internationally recognizable, Lucent remained much more closely associated with Seiko’s home market.
This particular reference appeared in Seiko’s 1994 Japanese catalog as the SSCRW045, priced at ¥28,000 when new and scheduled for release in August of that year. Powered by Seiko’s slim 5E21 quartz movement, it represents a largely overlooked side of 1990s Seiko: small, carefully detailed dress watches designed specifically for the Japanese market.
Three points to note.
Produced in October 1994 for the Japanese domestic market.
Palladium-plated base-metal case with a curved sapphire crystal.
