1989 SEIKO SCUBA 200M — REF. 5H25-6050
Long before the modern Prospex catalog became synonymous with Seiko dive watches, the brand was quietly producing some wonderfully unconventional underwater instruments. The 5H25-6050 Scuba 200m is one of them — a seldom-seen late-'80s diver that takes Seiko's famously functional design language and gives it a distinctly more playful personality. This example dates to October 1989, placing it squarely in one of the most interesting periods of Japanese quartz watchmaking.
The dial is where this watch earns its character. A clean white surface is punctuated by oversized luminous plots and broad, heavily lumed hands, while the restrained blue SCUBA 200m signature anchors the lower half of the dial. Surrounding it is an unusual split blue-and-silver elapsed-time bezel, giving the watch an almost nautical, resort-era quality without sacrificing the legibility expected of a true Seiko sports watch. At approximately 39mm across and only around 10mm thick, it also wears noticeably slimmer and more compactly than many of the divers that followed it.
Underneath the color is serious tool-watch construction: stainless steel, a screw-down crown, unidirectional rotating bezel, Hardlex crystal and an original rating of 200 meters. Power comes from Seiko's 5H25 three-jewel quartz caliber, complete with a date display, hacking seconds and period-rated accuracy of approximately ±15 seconds per month. It represents the era when quartz wasn't the alternative to Seiko's serious watches — it was some of Seiko's most advanced watchmaking.
What makes this particular example even more compelling is the bracelet. The clasp carries the YB14AJ stamp visible on the watch, corresponding with the YB14A bracelet specified in Seiko's parts records for the 5H25-6050. Together with the wave-engraved caseback, protected crown and wonderfully period-correct blue-and-white palette, it makes for a remarkably complete piece of late-1980s Seiko design — more obscure than the company's headline divers, but arguably all the more interesting because of it.
