THE 1991 SEIKO SCUBA 200M — A MINIATURE DIVER, PRESERVED IN TIME
Introduced in 1991, the Seiko Scuba 200M reference 7N85-0010 represents a fascinating chapter in Seiko's long history of dive watches. While the brand was already well established for its robust, professional-grade divers, the Scuba brought that same design philosophy into a remarkably compact package. Built with the functional characteristics of a serious dive watch, but sized for a smaller wrist, it offered an unusual combination of utility and refinement. More than three decades later, this example survives in New Old Stock (NOS) condition, offering a rare opportunity to experience one of Seiko's early 1990s designs much as it would have appeared when new.
The watch features a beautifully balanced two-tone design, pairing a brushed stainless steel case with a gold-tone rotating bezel and matching crown. Its champagne-colored dial has a subtle sunburst finish, complemented by luminous circular hour markers, bold hands, and a framed date window at three o'clock. The original-style aesthetic continues through the stainless steel bracelet, where polished gold-tone accents run along each link, giving the watch an unmistakably early 1990s character. At approximately 32mm excluding the crown, its compact proportions make it equally appealing as a women's diver or a smaller unisex sports watch.
Despite its modest dimensions, the Scuba was designed with genuine diving functionality. The case was originally rated to 200 meters of water resistance and features a screw-down crown, a unidirectional rotating timing bezel, and Seiko's distinctive wave emblem engraved into the caseback. Inside is the Japanese-made Seiko caliber 7N85, a dependable quartz movement with a date complication. This combination of practical engineering and restrained proportions reflects an era when Seiko was experimenting with new ways to make its dive watches accessible to a wider range of wrists.
What makes this particular example especially compelling is its New Old Stock condition. Finding a vintage dive watch that has escaped decades of regular wear is increasingly uncommon, particularly one retaining such a cohesive two-tone appearance. The champagne dial, gold-tone accents, and sharply defined case give the watch a remarkably well-preserved presence. Rather than simply being another vintage Seiko, this Scuba offers a small window into the brand's early 1990s design language, combining the personality of a classic dive watch with the charm of an exceptionally preserved timepiece.
Three points to note.
