2019 SEIKO 5 SPORTS “SEA URCHIN” — A MODERN DIVE-WATCH CLASSIC

Produced in March 2019, this Seiko 5 Sports SNZF17, affectionately nicknamed the “Sea Urchin” by collectors, represents one of the most recognizable designs from Seiko’s modern mechanical era. Introduced well before the 2019 relaunch of the Seiko 5 Sports collection, the Sea Urchin developed a devoted following for its classic dive-watch proportions, robust construction, and unmistakable Seiko character. Its design draws on the traditional language of professional dive watches while maintaining an identity distinctly its own.

The deep black dial is defined by bold luminous hour markers, a combination of circular, rectangular, and triangular indices that provide exceptional legibility. Broad, sharply pointed hands complement the dial’s sporting character, while a framed day-date aperture at 3 o’clock adds everyday functionality. Surrounding the dial is a black unidirectional rotating bezel with prominent white numerals and minute markers, giving the watch its recognizable tool-watch aesthetic.

The stainless steel case measures approximately 41mm across, with substantial crown guards, contrasting brushed and polished surfaces, and a purposeful wrist presence.
