JAPANESE MODERNISM IN RECTANGULAR FORM
By the 1980s, Seiko had little left to prove in quartz watchmaking. The company that helped transform the watch industry was applying its electronic movements to an enormous range of designs, including traditional dress watches that looked backward aesthetically while remaining thoroughly modern underneath. The 5P39-5A10 belongs to that quieter side of Seiko’s catalog: a slender rectangular dress watch built around proportions that had defined elegant wristwatches for generations.
Its champagne dial is remarkably restrained. A fine vertical brushing catches the light without becoming flashy, while a thin printed inner rectangle reinforces the geometry of the case. Gold-tone baton markers surround an elongated Arabic 12, with the date unusually positioned at six o’clock. The two-hand layout leaves the dial almost completely undisturbed, giving the watch the clean symmetry that makes rectangular dress watches so effective.
Inside is Seiko’s caliber 5P39 quartz movement, part of a broad movement family used across numerous Seiko references. Here, quartz is particularly appropriate: eliminating the visual and mechanical bulk associated with many traditional movements allowed Seiko to package dependable everyday timekeeping into the thin, formal proportions demanded by this style of watch.
The case is perhaps the most interesting part. Its long rectangular body terminates in sculpted, flared lugs, with contrasting gold-tone accents at each corner breaking up the otherwise silver-colored case. The caseback identifies the construction as base metal with a stainless-steel back, a common approach for dress watches of the period. Paired here with a warm brown leather strap, the result feels distinctly vintage without becoming costume-like—a small, elegant Seiko from an era when quartz technology and traditional dress-watch design comfortably occupied the same wrist.
Three points to note.

— Champagne vertically brushed dial with a symmetrical six-o’clock date display.
— Rectangular two-tone case with sculpted lugs and classic Tank-style proportions.
