A TWO-TONE SEIKO FROM THE END OF THE ’90S
Produced most likely in January 1999, this Seiko 7N82-0790 captures a particular kind of late-20th-century Seiko design: compact proportions, restrained detailing, and just enough gold tone to give an otherwise simple watch some presence. At roughly 30mm, it was originally positioned as a smaller dress watch, but its proportions work equally well today as a compact unisex piece.
The dial is remarkably straightforward. A clean white surface is paired with slim gold-tone applied hour markers, matching hands, and a framed date window at three o’clock. Around it sits a narrow gold-tone bezel punctuated by small decorative accents, while the softly sculpted stainless case flows directly into the bracelet rather than relying on conventional protruding lugs.
That bracelet is one of the details that makes the watch. Brushed steel links are interrupted by narrow polished gold-tone sections running vertically through the center, continuing the two-tone treatment of the bezel and crown. The result feels distinctly late ’90s without becoming overly decorative — more restrained than many two-tone watches of the period.
Inside is Seiko’s 7N82 quartz caliber, a compact Japanese movement providing hours, minutes, seconds, and a quick-set date. It is exactly the sort of movement Seiko built its reputation around during the quartz era: simple, thin, and designed for everyday reliability. More than twenty-five years later, the 7N82-0790 remains an interesting snapshot of the understated dress watches Seiko was producing at the close of the century.
Three points to note.
