1978 SEIKO TYPE II—EMERALD DIAL

By the late 1970s, Seiko had moved quartz from technological spectacle into something more refined, wearable, and distinctly Japanese. The Type II line occupied an interesting place in that transition: more attainable than Seiko’s flagship quartz watches, yet still positioned above much of the company’s mechanical catalog. Offered from the latter half of the 1970s into the early 1980s, Type II became one of Seiko’s most varied expressions of early quartz design.

This 7546-7100 is one of the references that makes the series especially compelling today. Its deep emerald-green dial shifts dramatically with the light, moving from nearly black at the perimeter to a vivid metallic green through the center. Applied baton markers, a restrained handset and the framed day-date window keep the design disciplined, while the small Type II signature at six gives the watch an unmistakably period-correct identity. The result feels far richer than the utilitarian reputation vintage quartz sometimes carries.

Inside is Seiko’s caliber 7546, a 32,768 Hz quartz movement developed by Suwa with day and date functionality and a stated accuracy of approximately ±15 seconds per month. It also features a low-battery indication that advances the seconds hand in two-second intervals—a small reminder that this was sophisticated technology when introduced, not simply an inexpensive alternative to a mechanical watch.

The stainless-steel case keeps the proportions compact and distinctly vintage, with broad angular shoulders framing the round dial and crystal. Paired here with a signed Seiko multi-link stainless-steel bracelet, the watch has the integrated, almost architectural appearance that defined some of Seiko’s best late-1970s design. More than four decades later, the combination of emerald dial, sharp casework and early Japanese quartz engineering gives the 7546-7100 a character that feels increasingly difficult to find in modern watches.
