1981 SEIKO TYPE II — TEXTURED SILVER DIAL
By the early 1980s, Seiko had firmly established itself as a leader in quartz watchmaking, transforming what had once been revolutionary technology into an increasingly accessible standard of precision. The Type II collection occupied an interesting position within Seiko's lineup, offering much of the technical sophistication of its higher-end quartz models at a more approachable price. Produced in October 1981, this reference 7546-8080 captures that philosophy through a distinctly Japanese combination of precision engineering, restrained aesthetics, and thoughtful design.
The centerpiece is its beautifully textured silver dial, featuring a fine, almost frosted surface that subtly catches and reflects light. Black baton hour markers and matching hands provide sharp contrast against the pale background, while a framed day-date window at three o'clock adds everyday practicality. The bilingual English and Kanji day wheel identifies its Japanese domestic market origins, and the distinctive Type II emblem at six o'clock completes an otherwise remarkably clean and balanced dial.
Powering the watch is Seiko's in-house caliber 7546, a four-jewel quartz movement developed by Suwa Seikosha. Operating at 32,768 Hz, the movement was engineered to deliver accuracy within approximately ±15 seconds per month, an impressive standard for its era. Alongside its quickset day-date functionality, the caliber incorporates a low-battery indicator that advances the seconds hand in two-second intervals when a replacement is needed. It represents a period when Seiko approached quartz movements with much of the same mechanical sophistication and attention to detail found in traditional watchmaking.
The stainless-steel case measures approximately 36mm across, with broad, angular shoulders and polished surfaces that give the watch a striking architectural presence. Particularly distinctive is its stainless-steel bracelet, featuring an intricate repeating pattern of octagonal links that introduces an almost jewelry-like quality to the design. The geometric bracelet complements the sharp casework while contrasting beautifully with the understated dial. Together, these elements make the 7546-8080 an excellent example of Seiko's early quartz design language, where technical innovation and unconventional styling existed in perfect balance.
Three points to note.
Finely textured silver dial with bilingual English/Kanji day-date display
Four-jewel Seiko 7546 quartz movement, rated to ±15 seconds per month
